Eden No-Till Single-Row Seed Drill
After YEARS of requests from our customers, we FINALLY found a no-till seed drill that would attach to one of our walk-behind tractors!
Manufactured by the Eden Equipment company of South Africa, this robust one-row unit will drill large seeds (corn, beans, peas, large sunflowers, etc.) into un-tilled soil and cover crop residue. Penetration into the soil is facilitated by a 5/8”-wide steel ripper shank that has a seed drop-tube following behind it. Both the ripper shank and the seed drop tube are adjustable independently, so a ripping depth of 3.5” to 6” and a planting depth of 2” to 5” is achievable.
The unit has two large solid-rubber wheels which can be adjusted down to hold the ripper shank up out of the ground for transport, or lowered to act as gauge wheels.
The unit has 2 steel hoppers: One for seed (capacity 8 quarts, in the rear), and one for granulated fertilizer (capacity 24 quarts, in the front). You do not have to use the fertilizer-applying function if you don’t want to…but it comes on the unit anyway. Both functions are driven by the steel cleated “closer” wheel on the back.
Seed spacing is adjustable in 12 different settings from 3.75” to 17”. There are 6 “easy-switch” settings achieved by adjusting a lever on a small gearbox (see picture), and then, the drive sprockets for the seeder mechanism can swap positions (large for small sprocket & vice versa) to give a whole different range of distances.
You can offset the handlebars of the walking tractor to walk NEXT to the seeder…OR, you can stand on the little foot-platforms on the rear of the frame, and RIDE. Planting can be done at speeds ranging from 1.5 to 3 MPH.
With the limited amount of traction available with a walk-behind tractor, a single-row unit is the only option we offer, as a seed drill pulls with a good bit of resistance in harder soils. It is recommended that the tractor be equipped with traction augmentation such as wheel weights. Only applicable to walking tractors with differential axles and at least 22” tall wheels.
