Through extensive research, The Rodale Institute has designed simple Manual Crimper-Rollers that can be pushed or pulled by farm tractors (more info). The idea of such a device is that it rolls down cover crops and “crimps” the stem every 5-7 inches to stop the flow of juices through the stalk…thus killing the cover crop while leaving it in place as a mulch. (TIMING is absolutely critical in such an operation…if the crop is rolled down too early, the roots will still have enough energy to sprout new stems, and if it is done too late, there will be viable seeds that will re-seed a new cover crop.
The USDA Agricultural Research Station in Alabama bought a BCS 853 tractor from us, and developed a “Mechanical Crimper/Roller” to fit it. (PDF fact sheet) We tested this implement, and while the actual crimping performance was very good, we were NOT satisfied with several aspects of this machine. Disadvantages we observed were:
High vibration levels, which will negatively affect the tractor and PTO coupling
Contrary to the claim on the USDA document we link to above, this unit is VERY HEAVY, and hard to maneuver (it may be light compared to a full-size-tractor mounted crimper, but it is still over 200 lbs!
Typical of all the tools we carry from R2 Rinaldi, this is a very well-built implement. This seeder / spreader is designed for seeding lawns, cover-crop, or other full-width dense seeding operations OR it can be used as a drop-spreader of granulated fertilizer or similar material. It features an expanded-mesh roller in the rear, which helps press the seed / fertilizer into the soil a bit and also drives the agitator shaft in the hopper via a no-slippage roller chain.
Flail mowers are the most popular tool to mow cover crops when a quick assimilation into the soil is desired. For complete information on Flail Mowers, visit the Flail Mower page in our Mowing section.
